Max Euwe
A mathematics professor who dethroned Alekhine — if only for two years.

Biography
A Dutch mathematician and teacher by profession, Euwe stunned the chess world by defeating Alexander Alekhine for the title in 1935, only to lose the rematch two years later in 1937.
He remained deeply involved in organized chess for the rest of his life, later serving as President of FIDE from 1970 to 1978 — including during the tense negotiations surrounding the 1972 Fischer–Spassky World Championship match.
