Biography
Tal became the youngest World Champion to that point, at 23, by defeating Botvinnik in 1960, only to lose the mandatory rematch the following year.
He battled serious kidney disease for most of his adult life, yet continued playing brilliant, wildly tactical chess at a world-class level for decades afterward.
Playing Style
Wildly tactical and intuitive — Tal thrived on complications even when he couldn't calculate every line to the end, trusting his instinct for chaos over pure, exhaustive calculation.
