Atomic Chess

Every capture is a small explosion — and it can take out far more than just the two pieces involved.

How the Rules Change

  • Whenever a piece captures another, both the capturing piece and the captured piece are removed from the board, along with every other piece (except pawns) standing on one of the eight squares immediately surrounding the capture square.
  • Kings can never capture (doing so would blow up the capturing king itself), and if an explosion would remove a king from the board, that side loses instantly — there's no checkmate to calculate, just a sudden, final blast radius.

History

Atomic Chess is a long-standing variant popularized in its modern, precisely-defined form primarily through online chess platforms and their variant communities.

Why Play It

The explosion mechanic makes king safety calculations wildly different from standard chess — a king can be perfectly safe from any normal attack yet lose instantly to a well-placed capture two squares away.
