Bughouse Chess

A team variant played on two boards at once: capture a piece on your board, and your partner can drop it onto theirs.

How the Rules Change

  • Four players form two teams of two, each pair sharing one team across two adjacent boards, with colors mirrored (if you play White on your board, your partner plays Black on the other).
  • Whenever you capture an enemy piece, you don't just remove it — you hand it to your partner, who can drop it onto their own board as an extra piece on a future turn, exactly like Crazyhouse's drop rule.
  • A team wins the moment checkmate occurs on either of the two boards.

History

Bughouse has been a popular informal club and tournament variant for decades, especially prized for its frantic pace and the constant coordination it demands between partners.

Why Play It

It turns chess into a genuine team sport — timing when to feed your partner a piece, or ask them to stall for one, becomes just as important as the moves on your own board.
