The Short Version
'The Greeks' are a set of measures that describe how an option's price is expected to react to different factors. Professional options traders use them to understand and manage risk precisely; beginners mainly need to recognize what each one represents.
Explain It Like I'm 10
Imagine you're tracking how a snowball rolling downhill changes. Delta is like asking 'for every extra foot the hill drops, how much bigger does the snowball get right now?' Gamma is asking 'is that growth rate itself speeding up or slowing down?' Theta is like the snowball slowly melting a little every minute just from sitting in the sun, even if it doesn't move at all — that's time working against it. Vega is how much bigger the snowball would get if suddenly a huge snowstorm hit (more chaos/uncertainty = more potential size). The Greeks are just different ways of measuring what makes an option's value wiggle.
Step-by-Step Example
- 1 Delta of 0.60 means: if the stock price rises $1, the option's price rises about $0.60.
- 2 Gamma tells you how fast that 0.60 Delta itself would change as the stock keeps moving — a high Gamma means Delta shifts quickly.
- 3 Theta of −$0.05 means: the option loses about $0.05 of value each day, purely from time passing, even if the stock price doesn't move.
- 4 Vega of $0.10 means: if the market's expected future volatility rises by 1%, the option's price rises about $0.10.
- 5 Rho measures sensitivity to interest rate changes — usually the smallest factor for short-term options, but more relevant for options that last a year or more.
- 6 Professional traders watch all five together to understand exactly what's driving an option's price minute to minute — beginners mainly just need to recognize the names and what each one represents.
Quick Recap
- ✓ Delta: how much the option price moves for a $1 move in the stock (also used as a rough estimate of probability the option expires in the money).
- ✓ Gamma: how much Delta itself changes as the stock price moves.
- ✓ Theta: how much value the option loses each day purely from time decay.
- ✓ Vega: how sensitive the option price is to changes in implied volatility.
- ✓ Rho: how sensitive the option price is to changes in interest rates (usually the least impactful for short-term options).
