Contraindications for Lip Blushing

Some conditions rule it out entirely; more make it 'not now' or 'only with clearance'. Screening for them at consultation — and being willing to say no — is the artist's core safety duty.

Absolute (do not proceed)

Active cold sore or lip infection; active dermatological disease on the lips (eczema flare, dermatitis, cheilitis); known allergy to tattoo pigments; pregnancy and breastfeeding (precautionary); certain uncontrolled systemic disease; under-18; being under the influence; unrealistic expectations that cannot be reset.

Relative (needs management or clearance)

History of cold sores (antiviral cover); isotretinoin in the last 6–12 months (skin fragility — wait); diabetes (well controlled and often GP letter); autoimmune conditions and immunosuppression; bleeding disorders or anticoagulants (medical advice, never stop meds without a doctor); keloid or hypertrophic scarring tendency; recent lip filler (wait 4+ weeks); active acne or perioral dermatitis near the lips; recent sunburn; some heart conditions and uncontrolled hypertension (affect anaesthetic choice); allergy to lidocaine/'caines'.

Get it in writing

A signed medical-history form and, where relevant, a GP/specialist clearance letter protect the client and the artist. If in doubt, defer and refer — a delayed appointment is always better than a harmed client.
