Four mechanisms
Lymphatic drainage: macrophages carrying pigment, and free particles, are slowly trafficked away. Photodegradation: UV light chemically breaks pigment molecules, especially organic ones. Mechanical turnover: the constant renewal of lip tissue carries particles toward the surface to be shed. Dispersion: repeated micro-movement scatters particles until they are too sparse to see.
Why lips lose colour first
Every one of those is accelerated in the lip: more blood and lymph flow, more sun exposure on a forward-facing surface, faster epidermal turnover, and non-stop movement. A forearm tattoo fades over decades; a lip blush noticeably softens in one to three years.
Colour shift on the way down
A pigment blend might contain a warm red-brown iron oxide plus small amounts of other tones for correction. If the warm fraction clears faster, the residual can look cooler, pinker or greyer than the fresh result — which is why a timely colour boost, before it gets thin, keeps the hue true.
Slowing it down
Daily SPF lip balm, no smoking, keeping lips moisturised, and not chasing extra saturation with aggressive passes (which mostly adds trauma, not longevity) are the levers clients actually control.
