Why it fades faster than an arm tattoo
Lip skin has a thin epidermis, no hair follicles and no oil glands, a rich blood supply and very fast cell turnover. Pigment is placed in the upper dermis, shallower than body-tattoo depth. Add daily friction from eating, drinking and talking, plus ultraviolet light, and the particles are broken up and carried away comparatively quickly.
That is a feature, not a fault. Fashion and face shape change; a lip colour that quietly retires after a couple of years is easier to live with than one that does not.
Typical timeline
Most people see their best colour after the touch-up heals, keep a clear result for 12–18 months, and notice obvious softening by 2–3 years. Very fair, sun-exposed or oily-skinned clients fade faster; those with more melanin and diligent sun protection can hold colour longer.
A 'colour boost' every 12–24 months keeps it looking fresh and is quicker and cheaper than the first appointment.
Can it be removed?
If you simply stop refreshing it, it will keep fading and eventually become very faint, though a ghost of colour can linger for years. Saline lifting or laser can speed removal, but lips are delicate and this is a specialist job.
