Melanin, Lip Colour and the Fitzpatrick Scale

The Fitzpatrick phototype predicts how skin responds to injury and UV — including a tendency toward post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in higher types, which changes pigment choice and aftercare for lips.

What Fitzpatrick measures

The scale (I–VI) classifies skin by how it burns and tans. It is a rough tool, but useful: higher phototypes have more active melanocytes that respond to inflammation by making extra pigment, so any trauma — including a lip tattoo — carries a higher risk of a temporary or lasting dark patch (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, PIH).

Implications for lip blushing

Deeper natural lip pigmentation (common but not universal in types IV–VI) already filters the tattoo colour toward brown and mute, so a neutralising or brightening step is often planned, and expectations are set toward 'even and defined' rather than 'bright'.

Gentle technique, fewer passes, strict sun avoidance during healing and sometimes a longer gap before the touch-up all reduce PIH risk. Some artists patch-test colour on higher phototypes more readily.

Not a rule book

Individuals vary widely within a type, and lip melanin does not track skin phototype perfectly. Fitzpatrick informs the plan; the consultation, a test area and healed photos of similar clients decide it.
