Organic vs Inorganic Pigments

Inorganic iron oxides are muted, opaque, stable and fade true; organic pigments are bright, translucent, strong and fade unpredictably. Most lip formulas blend both, weighted toward iron oxide.

Two chemistries

Inorganic cosmetic pigments are mostly iron oxides (reds, yellows, browns, black) plus titanium dioxide (white). They are mineral, larger-particled, opaque, and chemically very stable, so they resist UV and heal close to the bottle colour. Their weakness is limited vividness and a tendency to look 'earthy'.

Organic pigments are carbon-based synthetic molecules (azo reds, quinacridones and similar). They are intensely saturated, translucent, and go a long way — but they can fade fast, fade oddly, and a few have raised regulatory concern.

Why lip pigments blend them

Pure iron oxide lip colour can look flat and heals somewhat cool as titanium white 'frosts'. Pure organic colour looks gorgeous fresh but can betray you in the heal. A typical modern lip pigment is an iron-oxide base warmed and brightened with a measured dose of organic red or orange, giving lifelike colour that still heals predictably.

What to ask a brand

Reputable pigment makers publish full ingredient lists (CI numbers), batch documentation and a safety data sheet, and state compliance with the regulations of the markets they sell into. 'Trade secret' colour formulas are a red flag.
