Setting Up a Hygienic Workstation

A clean lip-blushing setup separates the world into 'sterile field' and 'everything else', is built with gloved hands after disinfecting surfaces, and can be torn down into clinical waste in under a minute.

The room

Hard, washable floors and surfaces; a dedicated procedure area away from food, pets and soft furnishings; hand-wash sink with liquid soap and paper towel; good task lighting; sharps container within reach; lidded clinical-waste bin; and a separate clean zone for sealed stock.

Building the tray

Disinfect the trolley, lay barrier film, then with clean gloved hands open onto it only what this client needs: wrapped machine, sealed cartridges, pigment cups, decanted pigment, saline/rinse, gauze, cotton tips, mixing sticks, pencil, gloves in your size, and after-care. Wrap the lamp, cord and any device. Nothing goes back to the stock shelf once it is on the tray.

During and after

Keep one hand 'clean' and one 'working' where possible; change gloves on any breach. Afterward: sharps to the sharps bin, all disposables and barrier film into clinical waste, hard surfaces disinfected with an appropriate (often tuberculocidal) product at the stated contact time, then re-set. Log the client, pigments (brand, colour, batch, expiry) and needles used.
