Line items beyond the course
Quality machine and power unit; ongoing cartridges, pigments, practice skins, barriers and PPE; BBP certification and renewals; practitioner and premises licences; professional insurance; mentorship or apprenticeship fees; model-day expenses (models often paid a nominal fee or given free work plus you absorb supplies); photography setup; website and booking tools; and continuing education.
The hidden cost: time
You will not earn full price for months. Portfolio-building means discounted or free model work, slow appointments, and cases you redo. Budget for a runway, not an instant income.
Where not to cut
Cheap 'certification mills', skipping BBP or insurance, second-hand needles (never), unbranded mystery pigment, and skipping mentorship. Cutting these does not save money — it moves the cost to your first clients and your reputation.
