Why it is essential
Healing is uneven: inflammation, scabbing and each person's chemistry mean some zones hold 80% of the colour and others 30%. You cannot know which until it is healed. The touch-up is corrective, not cosmetic upselling.
Timing
Too early (before ~5 weeks) and the lip is still settling, so you misjudge what is missing and re-traumatise recovering tissue. Too late is fine but colour keeps fading. Six to eight weeks is typical; higher Fitzpatrick types or difficult heals may wait longer.
What happens
Re-map lightly, re-numb, then targeted passes: fill patchy areas to match, warm or cool the overall tone if the heal drifted, reinforce the border, and re-blur the edge. It is quicker and less saturated than session one.
After that
Once the touch-up heals, that is the result. A 'colour boost' every 12–24 months maintains it. Additional early sessions are only for genuine problems, not endless tweaking — over-working shortens the lip's tolerance.
