Why defense matters
Because the player who discards the winning tile pays double, giving away Mah Jongg is the most expensive mistake in American play. Defense aims to reduce that risk when your own chances are poor.
Reading exposures
Exposures reveal most of an opponent's hand. Match their exposed groups against the card to guess which hands they might be making, and therefore which tiles they still need. Tiles that fit those hands are "hot" — discarding them is risky.
Safe discards
Tiles that have already been discarded several times, or that fit none of the hands consistent with visible exposures, are safer. Late in the game, many players keep a few safe tiles in hand specifically so they have something harmless to throw.
Balancing attack and defense
Defense is not about giving up early. It is about recognising the moment when your hand is unlikely to finish and an opponent is close. Experienced players shift gradually, discarding safer tiles while keeping any realistic chance of their own Mah Jongg.
