The basic payment
Each hand on the card has a value. When a player wins on another player's discard, the discarder pays twice the value and the other two players pay the value once. If the hand is worth 25, the discarder pays 50 and the others 25 each.
Many groups play for small change; others simply record scores.
Self-pick
If the winner draws the winning tile from the wall, everyone pays double. A 25-point self-picked hand earns 50 from each player.
Jokerless hands
A hand completed without any jokers earns double under standard League rules. Some hands, such as those built from singles and pairs, can never use jokers; groups and the card's notes explain how such hands are treated. Check the current rules before you play for stakes.
Wall games and errors
If no one wins before the wall runs out, nobody pays. Penalties apply to errors: a player who declares Mah Jongg in error with exposed tiles that cannot be fixed may have a dead hand, and a player whose discard gives another player Mah Jongg pays the discarder's share. Most groups follow the League's published rules for these situations.
