Where to look
For American Mah Jongg, check Jewish community centres, synagogues, public libraries, senior centres, recreation departments and local social clubs. For Chinese styles, try Chinese cultural associations, community centres and night-market events. For riichi, look for university clubs, board-game cafés and online community servers.
Ask the right questions
Which style and which rules? Is it for beginners or experienced players? Is there a fee? How often does it meet? Many groups welcome newcomers but expect them to know basic rules.
Start your own
If no group exists nearby, start one: four people are enough. Libraries and community centres often provide space, and online tutorials can fill gaps until you find a teacher.
Our directory
This site's Clubs & Lessons page lists established groups, associations and types of venues in cities around the world. Details change often, so always check before going.
