Tables and space
Each table needs four players and a square surface. Card tables work well; a mat softens noise. Leave space around the table for elbows and side tables.
Equipment and rules
Check sets are complete, provide racks if needed, and print a summary of house rules. For American play, make sure everyone has the current card; for riichi, prepare score sticks.
Mixing levels
If beginners are coming, pair them with patient players, allow open-handed practice, and keep stakes at zero.
The social side
Plan food breaks, keep drinks off the table and let the evening flow. The best mahjong nights are as much about conversation as tiles.
