Why organisations matter

Competitive play needs agreed rules, rankings and calendars. National and international associations provide these, making it possible for players from different countries to compete fairly.

Europe

The European Mahjong Association, founded in 2005, brings together national associations from around two dozen countries. It maintains player rankings and awards the European championships in MCR and Riichi.

North America

Riichi clubs and associations in the United States and Canada have formed federations to coordinate tournaments, while American Mah Jongg is anchored by the National Mah Jongg League and a number of independent tournament organisers.

Asia

In China, Japan and elsewhere, national bodies and professional organisations run domestic competition, and international organisations stage world championships. For players, the practical benefit is simple: a findable calendar of events at every level.
