Words and sounds
In Cantonese the word for "book" sounds like the word for "lose", so some players avoid carrying books to a game or reading at the table. Similar wordplay surrounds numbers: four sounds like "death", eight like "prosper".
Seats and directions
Players on a losing streak may ask to change seats, believing that luck sits with the chair. Others favour the seat facing the door or a particular direction.
Clothes and charms
Red clothing, lucky charms and even particular underwear are part of some players' rituals. None changes the tiles, but they add to the fun.
Table manners as superstition
Touching another player's shoulder, counting winnings during play, or sitting with your back to a door are considered unlucky by some. Whatever you believe, respecting the table's customs keeps everyone happy.
