Do not try to call chows; runs in American hands are singles and cannot be claimed. Keep your flowers — they are part of the hand. And remember to check every exposure against the card.

Calling a chow: routine in Chinese and Japanese play, never allowed in American.

From American to Chinese styles

Forget the card: any four sets and a pair can win (subject to minimums). Set aside flowers when drawn and draw replacements. There are no jokers.

Into riichi

Always confirm you have a yaku before calling. Learn furiten early. Arrange discards in rows. Get used to scoring in points rather than money.

Out of riichi

In Hong Kong or MCR you may win without a yaku if you meet the minimum; furiten does not apply; discards can be claimed by anyone for pungs.
