Types of lessons
Many teachers offer a beginner series of two to four sessions, followed by "guided" or "supervised" play where an instructor circulates among tables. Private lessons for a group of friends are also popular, especially for American Mah Jongg.
What a good course covers
Tile recognition, setting up the wall, dealing, the rhythm of play, calling, winning, scoring and etiquette — with plenty of hands played. For American style, it should also cover the Charleston and how to read the card.
Preparing
Bring the current card for American lessons. Ask whether sets are provided. Expect to feel overwhelmed at first; most students feel comfortable after a few sessions of play.
After the course
The crucial step is continuing to play soon after the lessons end. Join an open play session or form a group with classmates.
