Choosing an event
Look for local or beginner-friendly tournaments run by clubs or national associations. American Mah Jongg tournaments, riichi opens and MCR events all exist in many countries.
Know the rules
Tournament rules are published in advance and may differ from your home rules. Study the details on scoring, penalties and timing.
At the table
Arrive early, introduce yourself, play promptly and call a referee rather than arguing over disputes. Accept results graciously.
Learning from it
Win or lose, you will learn more in one tournament day than in weeks of casual play. Note the hands that surprised you and review them afterwards.
