Footvolley, born on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s, combines volleyball's court, net and scoring with soccer's rule that players may never use their hands or arms.

Footvolley is a hybrid sport that emerged on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the 1960s, combining the court dimensions, net and general scoring structure of beach volleyball with a defining rule borrowed from soccer: players may not use their hands or arms to contact the ball at any point. Instead, players control, pass and attack the ball using their feet, legs, chest and head, demanding a very different and highly specialized set of technical skills from either traditional volleyball or traditional soccer.

The sport grew out of Brazil's deep beach culture and its equally deep soccer tradition, and it has since spread internationally, particularly across South America and parts of Europe, supported by dedicated international federations and world championship events. Elite footvolley players are typically drawn from backgrounds in both soccer and volleyball, since the sport demands soccer-level foot skill and touch combined with volleyball-style court awareness, positioning and net play.

A demanding niche sport

Because striking a moving ball accurately with the feet, chest or head over a volleyball net is considerably harder than doing so with the hands, footvolley is generally regarded as a more technically demanding sport than either of its parent games individually, and it remains most deeply established in Brazil, where it originated and continues to draw the sport's strongest competitive talent.

Attacking technique borrowed from bicycle kicks

One of footvolley's most visually striking techniques is an overhead attacking strike similar to a soccer bicycle kick, used to drive the ball down into the opponent's court with real power despite never touching it with the hands. Mastering this and other overhead striking techniques with the same precision and reliability a volleyball spike achieves with the hand is a large part of what separates elite footvolley players from casual beach participants simply kicking a ball back and forth over a net.
