Lang Ping

Lang Ping is the only person in volleyball history to win an Olympic gold medal both as a player, with China in 1984, and as a head coach, guiding China to gold again in 2016.

Lang Ping's career spans two distinct eras of excellence in Chinese volleyball. As a player in the 1980s, she was one of the most feared attackers in the world and a key member of the Chinese women's national team that won Olympic gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, part of a broader run of Chinese success in that decade that established the country as one of women's volleyball's leading powers. Her attacking power and consistency during this period made her one of the sport's most recognizable global stars.

Decades later, Lang Ping returned to the Chinese national program as head coach and led the women's team to Olympic gold at the 2016 Rio Games, making her the only person in volleyball history to win Olympic gold both as a player and later as a head coach — an achievement that underscores both her playing pedigree and her standing as one of the sport's most respected tactical minds. Her coaching career also included stints leading other national and club programs, further extending her influence across the international game.

A rare bridge between playing greatness and coaching greatness

Very few athletes in any team sport successfully make the transition from elite player to elite head coach at the very highest level, since the skills that make a great attacker are not automatically the same skills that make a great tactician and man-manager of an entire national roster. Lang Ping's dual Olympic gold medals as both player and coach are frequently cited specifically because that combination is so rare across volleyball, or indeed across most team sports at the Olympic level, making her career a genuinely distinctive case study in the sport's history.
