Olympic Volleyball

Olympic Volleyball

Indoor volleyball has been a full Olympic sport since Tokyo 1964, and beach volleyball since Atlanta 1996 — together, the two disciplines make volleyball one of only a handful of sports to appear at the Summer Games in two distinct formats.

Volleyball's Olympic history spans two separate disciplines. Indoor volleyball entered the Olympic program at the 1964 Tokyo Games with both men's and women's tournaments and has appeared at every Summer Olympics since. Beach volleyball followed decades later, appearing as a demonstration event at Barcelona 1992 before becoming a full medal sport at Atlanta 1996, making volleyball one of a small number of sports contested at the Olympics in two genuinely distinct competitive formats rather than simply different weight classes or events within one format.

Olympic qualification for indoor volleyball runs through a mix of continental championships, world qualification tournaments, and results from competitions like the Volleyball Nations League, while beach volleyball qualification is driven substantially by ranking points accumulated across the FIVB's international beach tour over an extended qualification window. Both disciplines award medals separately for men and women, and Olympic volleyball tournaments are consistently among the most attended and highest-demand ticketed events at each Summer Games.

A showcase for the sport's growth

Because the Olympics reach a far broader general-sports audience than any single-sport FIVB event, Olympic volleyball has repeatedly served as a major driver of participation and broadcast growth in host countries — Japan's home triumph in 1964 and the sport's continued strong domestic following there is one frequently cited example of this effect.

Sitting volleyball's parallel Paralympic tradition

Volleyball's Olympic story runs alongside a parallel Paralympic one: sitting volleyball has been a Paralympic medal sport since the 1980 Arnhem Games for men, with a women's competition added at Athens 2004, giving the wider sport of volleyball a genuinely continuous presence across the Olympic and Paralympic movements together, rather than only in the standing, able-bodied game most casual fans immediately picture.
