Regla Torres

Regla Torres, an outside hitter who won three consecutive Olympic gold medals with Cuba's dominant national team of the 1990s, was named the FIVB's Best Female Player of the 20th Century.

Regla Torres was a central figure on the Cuban women's national team during one of the most dominant runs in the sport's history, winning Olympic gold medals at the 1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Games as part of a Cuban squad that dominated women's volleyball through much of the 1990s. Torres made her senior international debut while still a teenager and quickly established herself as one of the most complete outside hitters in the world, combining attacking power with strong all-around technical skills.

In recognition of her sustained excellence across that era, the FIVB named Torres its Best Female Player of the 20th Century, placing her alongside Karch Kiraly as one of the two signature individual honors the federation awarded to mark the sport's first hundred years. Cuba's dominance during her prime — including that streak of three straight Olympic golds — remains one of the most remarkable sustained runs of team success in women's volleyball history.

An unusually young start to international stardom

Torres' rise to the top of women's volleyball at a very young age is itself a notable part of her story: she was still a teenager when she became a key contributor to a Cuban team already competing for major international titles, a level of early responsibility that few players at any position handle successfully. That she went on to sustain elite performance across three full Olympic cycles, rather than peaking briefly before fading, is a large part of what separates her career from many other talented young players who never matched that early promise with equally strong long-term results.
